Lefty has been close numerous times, should have won twice and now arrives at the 2008 U.S. Open needing to win.
And we think he will. But for the U.S. Open Free Agent Challenge, where you pick two unique golfers for each day of the four-round event, which day do you choose Lefty?
We advise against the final day, when he has had some meltdowns (2006 ring any bells?). For Tiger Woods, who comes in off a two-month rest following surgery, he is favored at most betting shops but it's really too much to ask of him to dominate this tough course.
However, if we had to choose a day for him, it would be Day 2 or Day 3. One day to get going, one day to get playing well and get the crowd excited, then another day to realize he's a bit rusty.
As you prepare your Free Agent Challenge picks (it's a $10 entry fee with guaranteed $75 prize for a 10-player tournament), here are the Top 20 players in 2008 based on scoring average. You'll see Mickelson at the top.
